***I wrote this in December on Maisie’s birthday while we were in Holland and I never published it because I didn’t really finish it…now I did.
Maisie is in the other room watching an Elmo video that Amy sent for her birthday and Jen is clipping her nails…I’m sitting here trying to figure out how the first two years of my daughter’s life have already happened!
This past year has been quite a year for this little one. She’s lived in more places and travelled to more countries than most people do before they are 22! We are truly creating a nomad child. She’s flown inter-continentally twice this year. She’s been on 6 separate plane trips, a handful of train rides, and been to 6 countries where we have actually stayed the night. She is an amazing traveler and always us and others at how great she does. She even has great balance on trains! She’s eaten more international food and been exposed to more languages that I was before I was 25!
I hope that this next year of her life won’t be as full of transition and change…hopefully Maisie will only hear one or two other languages! And maybe…just maybe she’ll have her own room! I do understand now that this time in her life is probably harder on us than it is on her. The real bummer is that she most likely won’t remember any of her travels or great experiences! Maybe we can figure out a more balanced nomadic life when she’s a teenager…who knows.
But here’s a Happy Birthday to one of the greatest joys of my life. I’m looking forward to the next year of hearing her little voice call me ‘Dagning’ and traveling the world together!
Well…I think it’s official. I am writing on this blog for myself. It’s been neglected, unmaintained, and I am all alone with my thoughts and reflections…and in fact, this post has taken me 3 different times of sitting down to finish!
So, with that being said…
This morning I was reading about time and what I read is applicable to me…
There is absolutely no need to run after time to catch it. It does not run away from us, it runs toward us. Whether you are intent on the next minute coming your way, or whether you are completely unaware of it, it will come your way. The future, whatever you do about it, will become the present, and so there is no need to try to jump out of the present into the future. We can simply wait for it to be there, and in that respect we can perfectly well be completely stable and yet move in time, because it is time that moves.
Beginning to Pray – Anthony Bloom
In the next season of life that comes my way, I am committing to be more aware of being present. The only place that we can truly change is the present. Certainly my present choices affect my future, but the future is not mine to determine. In the Scriptures, Joshua says to the people of Israel, “Choose this day whom you will serve…As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” I think that there is something significant about ‘choosing this day’ that I will serve. Life is too fragile to wait until tomorrow to do become the person that God wants me to be…

17 hours of travel is brutal. There’s no doubt about it. But there are sometimes things that make a long trip a bit longer…here is my list of things that made 17 hours seem like 27:
-Airline worker trying to shame us for not checking into the domestic leg of our trip 3 hours in advance.
-Terrible food at Chicago O’hare…
-I ‘got’ to sit next to another bigger guy on our 7.5 hour flight…not fun rubbing shoulders and elbows with another man for such a long time. At least Mark was cool, he did ask me on a second date
-The kid behind me screamed almost the entire time…and kicked my seat…poor parents
-My ipod hold button wasn’t working and my ipod would suddenly turn up really loud if I accidently hit it wrong
-Almost every time I went to the bathroom we hit turbulence and I had to do the balancing act!
-More terrible food on the plane
-The audio jack in my seat wasn’t working…so no movies for me…they were even showing Twilight and I missed it
-On our last flight, the plane was acting funny before takeoff…like flickering lights and weird noises. Despite being reassured by the flight attendant that it was ‘normal’ it still scared the heck out of us. Nothing is better than kind of wondering if you are going to die. I was reading a book about resurrection, heaven, and the afterlife…I almost felt like God was preparing me for what was to come!
Ok…enough of the complain-fest…despite all of this we did have the best trip with Maisie we’ve ever had! The flights went by fast and I got to do a lot of reading. Our friends Zac and Mike picked us up from the airport and gave us a nice (and helpful) welcome back! It’s great to be in Europe and I’m so thankful to be here again. Lisbon is beautiful…and we can see the ocean from our room. We’re getting some family time before our conference starts this week too. We really have so much to be thankful for!
After getting some rest tonight we’re going to go into Lisbon to see the city and do some touristy things. Hopefully we’ll be able to sleep through the night and wake up refreshed and ready to go! At least I won’t be having to rub shoulders with a man while trying to sleep tonight!
