WhatSize

Whatsize_128_128Jen and I are both Mac people…for many reasons that won’t be discussed in this post! But Jen has a 12″ PowerBook with only a 30GB hard drive…it’s crazy that iPods can come almost three times that size…Jen’s hard drive was almost completely full and I just didn’t understand why. I had gone through the hard disk but never saw anything that stood out as a wast of space. I even convinced her to FINALLY delete her Deleted Items from her Entourage, but even after deleting nearly 1000 (not kidding) e-mails it barely made a dent.

So I went on to Mac Update and found a program called WhatSize…it’s free and does a fairly quick scan of the hard drive and lists all the computer files in order from biggest to smallest. After this it made it very easy to figure out the culprit on Jen’s computer. A 9 gig file that was a support file to an application she didn’t have anymore! Oops. Needless to say that after deleting this her computer had all the elbow room it needed! If you have a Mac this is a must have program.

Babies & Spirituality

I’ve started a new category…called…you guessed it: Babies and Spirituality. For some reason God talks to me through seemingly normal, everyday things. At this point in my life babies are on the mind and God has been using my musings about Maisie’s little life to tell me things about Him, the Church, and following Jesus. Some of them funny, yet some fairly convicting to myself! I’m looking forward to sharing fatherhood and discipleship with whomever is reading….talk to you soon. Justin

My Canon Lens – 50mm 1.8f

Some of you may know that I am into photography. I have really enjoyed having not just one beautiful subject around the house, but two! When Jen’s sister came to Paris to visit I had her bring me a new lens for my camera. It’s one of the cheapest (both in make and price) Canon lenses…the 50mm 1.8f, but it takes beautiful pictures. Virtually every shot that I have from the past three weeks is with this lens and it by far surpasses the quality and sharpness I get in my other lenses.

Last night I was talking w/ my dad (who blogs here) on skype video and while we were on a break from our chat I went to grab the power chord for my computer. I was pulling it up off the ground and it caught the neck-strap of the camera which pulled the camera with lens attached onto the hardwood floor. When I heard the plastic pieces jingle across the floor I looked back to see two things: My camera wasn’t in pieces, but my lens was. My brand new, cheap, but excellent lens was in two pieces. You can imagine…I was not pleased. Thousand of beautiful pictures of my daughter and wife would never be realized through my new favorite lens.

I got back on the video with my dad and was having a hard time conversing because I was not happy and preoccupied with the two lens pieces in my hands. I am not a fix-it man because most things I fidget with aren’t fixed in the end. But God’s grace shown upon me this moment and I was able to put the lens back together! I really couldn’t believe it. And the even better part was it still worked when I put it back on the camera.

So here’s my quick review of the Canon 50mm 1.8f:

Amazing glass quality in a relatively cheap lens. Super sharp images (see below). Unfortunately, cheap also describes how it is made. But overall I would recommend this lens highly…if you can manage not to drop it. Also does really well in low light and the 50mm fixed length makes for greater use of creativity as there is no zooming…what you see is what you get.

Merry Christmas

Hey All..wanted to jump online real quick to wish you all a merry Christmas. As the day is nearly over in Europe we’re beginning to wind down. We had a great day lounging around the apartment and eating an amazing meal that Jen and Christine made…turkey, sweet potatoes, stuffing, mashed potatoes…you get the idea.

This year we didn’t do much as far as gifts for each other go…it was nice and strange. For so long Christmas day has culminated at the gift exchange, but we didn’t have that this year, so it was both nice and strange…the highlight of the day was when Jen left me to cuddle with Maisie for an hour this morning. Having a baby around the house has caused my perspective of God becoming a baby to completely change…or at least grow. As I laid there with Maisie this morning I was humbled again that God became a little person who was completely dependent on His creation. The humility and trust involved in this reality is too much for me to completely get. Well, maybe we did have presents…they just weren’t wrapped…except for with diapers.

Anyway…hope you all have a great time reflecting on Jesus in your corner of the world…talk to you soon. jp

E-tag

So I was tagged by my friend Lisa. This means that I am now required to write out 5 things you may not know about me. You can check her much more exciting list of books and baboons on her blog. But here we go:

1. When I was 11 or 12 I buried the baby Jesus in my neighbors’ nativity set in the snow. They failed to find the humor in my brother and I’s death, burial, and resurrection prophecy.

2. When I was in college I shaved my chest for 2 years. That was one of many mistakes I made in college.

3. (To go with a theme from Lisa’s list…) I love driving in places where I don’t know all the rules and have never been. Like Paris, the autobahn, and Tijuana…and LA fits in this too.

4. I never read for my classes in college, but now I read over 15 books a year.

5. I was almost kicked out of Christian college for partying…while I was a ministry major.

So I am going to tag a few other people now and spread the holiday cheer of authenticity and self-abasement.

God speaking through Will Smith?

Yes…the Fresh Prince himself…I was looking around on the CBS channel on YouTube yesterday and came across this interview of Will Smith. He is in a new movie called the Pursuit of Happyness. You can see the trailer here. I don’t know when it will come out in France, but I really want to see it.

Anyway, in the course of the interview, while reflecting on what he learned playing his role, Will said this:

“Being realistic is the most commonly travelled road to mediocrity.”

Being the idealist that I am…this quote stuck out just a bit to me. I have all too often found myself living life by what is realistic (or seen) and not living in an unrealistic abandon to trust God. I think that a life following Jesus is one that pulls us out of mediocrity and into the extraordinary…but do we ever get too realistic to let God do the unrealistic in us? Do we trust that much?

This line has never made it into any DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince tracks, but it’s probably one the best he’s said.

For the Person Who Has Everything

Hey All…here’s another video that’s circulating around my friends’ blogs that I want to pass on…just another something to think about…
